Whenever I make a milk shake it always comes out icy instead of creamy. Trust me, it's not the blender. I have a $500 Vita-Mix Blender so that's not the problem. Anyway, whenever I make milk shakes they're never like they are at the restaurants!
I better word for creamy would be thick.
when i was little mom made really creamy and thick strawberry milkshakes. she would only blend milk, vanilla, sugar, and frozen strawberries straight from the freezer.
use less liquid and more frozen stuff, for example, sometime i actually freeze my milk in ice trays. so frozen milk and frozen fruit, you're garanteed a thick and creamy shake! haha, just make sure you use a little liquid.

When you make a milkshake, don't put any ice in it. Put in more ice cream than anything else, and make sure it's not melted! Lots of ice cream + cold, cold, (2% or whole) milk; just those two ingredients and some chocolate sauce makes a yummy, thick shake!

milkshakes at restaurants have a whipping machine then the are blended. Maybe the ice cream is to frozen when you try to make them. try to thaw a little bit before you blend them next time.

I worked both in the restaurant and ice cream business. They usually use soft serve ice cream with a syrup flavoring like vanilla, chocolate or strawberry. The thickness is just because the use very little milk and mostly syrup and soft serve ice cream. If you don't use soft serve i recommend a all natural ice cream like Bryers and a touch of syrup. I could help better if I knew the flavor. hope this helps, Enjoy!

TO make my milkshakes, I shake them and don't blend it. I wouldn't put ice in them, that makes them to icy. And if your ice cream is kinda like frozen, I would wait to have a milkshake. I use whole milk instead low-fat milk. Since low-fat milk isn't thick like the whole milk.
TO shake them by hand, put the ingredients into a tall or short cup. Then plastic wrap the top of the cup tight. This will make sure none of the milkshake will spill. Just keep on shaking hard, sometimes when people aren't around I would sing a little song to entertain myself while shaking the cup. It will be creamy, yummy!
